Der genaue Vorgang des literarischen Schreibens verdeutlicht eine Grundeigenschaft der Sprache: Das gesprochene oder geschriebene Wort entspricht niemals genau einem vorgefaßten Gedanken oder einer Vorstellung. Das Aussprechen oder Aufschreiben ist einem Kartenspiel vergleichbar, in dem die Karten erst ihr wirkliches Gesicht zeigen, wenn sie gelegt oder aufgedeckt werden. Semantische und logische Zusammenhänge intelligenter und sprachlicher Leistungen sind in einem ständigen Fluß begriffen, Information und Bedeutung sind in unterschiedlichen Graden nicht vorhersagbar und bleiben einer nachträglichen Modifikation offen. Literatur instrumentalisiert diesen Vorgang und erzeugt durch kombinatorische Wortspiele einen Moment, in dem eine Anordnung von Worten eine unvorhergesehene Bedeutung oder einen unerwarteten Effekt erzeugen, den das Bewußtsein nicht willentlich hätte erzeugen können:
